Speech & Language Therapy
Communication touches everything. It shapes how children make friends, learn to read, follow along in the classroom, and express what they need. When something gets in the way of that, it can be frustrating for kids and parents alike.
Desirae works with children and teens to figure out what's going on and build skills that make a real difference in everyday life. Whether your child is a toddler who hasn't started talking yet or a teenager who struggles with reading social cues, support is available — in person in Fort Saskatchewan or virtually.
Who This Is For
Desirae works with children and teens across three age groups:
- Babies and toddlers (under 5) — including children who are late to talk or not yet communicating as expected for their age
- Children (under 12) — across a range of communication, language, and literacy concerns
- Teens (13–17) — including social communication, pragmatic language, and literacy support
What Desirae Can Help With
Speech sounds and articulation If your child has sounds they consistently say differently, or if others often have trouble understanding them, this may be an area to explore.
Language development This includes both expressive language (putting sentences together, grammar, finding words) and receptive language (understanding directions, concepts, and what others are saying).
Late talkers and pre-linguistic communication For young children who aren't yet talking — or aren't talking as much as expected — early support can make a meaningful difference.
Apraxia and motor speech disorders Specialist assessment and targeted therapy for children whose difficulty with speech sounds relates to motor planning and coordination.
Social communication (pragmatic language) For children and teens who understand language but find it hard to read social cues, take turns in conversation, or adjust how they communicate in different situations.
Pre-literacy and phonological awareness The building blocks of reading and spelling — recognising sounds in words, rhyming, and blending sounds together. Early support here can prevent longer-term literacy challenges.
Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) For children who benefit from additional tools — like communication apps, picture boards, or devices — to support and expand how they communicate.
Myofunctional therapy Support for oral motor patterns that may affect speech, swallowing, or breathing habits.
Assessments and Therapy
Not sure where to start? That's okay — it's part of the first conversation.
Desirae offers two types of initial assessments depending on what you're looking for:
Formal assessment uses standardised testing and includes a written report. This is a good fit if you need documentation to share with a school, pediatrician, or another service provider, or if you're looking for a formal diagnosis.
Clinical assessment is less formal and is used to understand your child's communication and set meaningful therapy goals. There's no written report with this option, but it's a great starting point if you're not sure what you need yet.
