The Preschool years can be challenging as this is when children are learning to navigate the world a little more independently from their caregivers. The following behaviours  include but are not limited to children aged 3-5 years old:

  • Tantrums
  • Aggressive (Rough & Tumble) play
  • Short Attention Span
  • Anxiety (separation and general)
  • Picky eating
  • Mispronouncing words
  • Bedtime battles
  • Aggression (hitting & biting)
  • Possessiveness
  • Hyperactivity

When should you be concerned about your child’s behaviours? Behaviours become a cause for concern when the behaviour impacts the child’s day to day functioning in the world around them. People are naturally social beings. If your child’s behaviour is significantly impacting their social relationships, there may be cause for concern.

Behaviours that can significantly impact social relationships are:

  • No interest in interacting with others
  • Not engaging in pretend play
  • Difficulty managing emotions
  • Does not respond to others outside of the family

There are also other behaviours outside of social interactions that can be cause for concern. These are:

  • Self-injury (e.g. head banging)
  • Sensitivity to noise and texture
  • Eats limited variety of foods
  • Irregular sleep patterns

Where do I start if I have concerns?
